We’re pleased to share the progress of the Superhero Lab Project, which aims to empower children aged 4-6 to explore sustainability through engaging scientific experiments. We also strive to equip kindergarten teachers with the skills they need to lead these activities. Our project fosters international collaboration among educators who are passionate about sustainability and STEM.

Project Objectives:

Engage young children in sustainability through enjoyable experiments.
Train teachers to effectively lead these activities.
Collaborate internationally on sustainability education.

Project Activities:

Researching current practices in sustainability education for kindergartens.
Creating the Superhero Lab multilingual learning pack, which includes experiments, a teacher handbook, video tutorials, and a training course.
Piloting labs with children and training local teachers.
Sharing knowledge through a Community of Practice and various events.

We were excited to see sustainability in early childhood education highlighted in a recent article by Maria Birkmeir for PAD. The article features Tim Rogas and Denise Müller from the Zwergenland daycare centre in Dresden, who shared their experiences at the first Superhero Lab Webinar, held in April.

Tim and Denise discussed their inspiring work in teaching young children about environmental protection, including activities like planting vegetable gardens and crafting with recycled materials. Their experiences, along with international exchanges with educators from Romania, Estonia, Nepal, and beyond, reflect a global commitment to advancing sustainability education.

Such cross-border collaboration is crucial, as it introduces fresh ideas and practices to kindergartens, enriching the learning experience for both children and educators. As Tim Rogas noted, “It’s exciting to see how daycare centres in different countries work on sustainability.” We couldn’t agree more and look forward to sharing our own insights and learning from others at the upcoming training in Malmö in October. In the meantime, we’ll continue working on the handbook to ensure it provides the best possible resources for educators.
