Regular read-aloud sessions expose children to a rich variety of linguistic inputs, helping them expand their vocabulary, improve grammar, and deepen language comprehension. Given the diverse linguistic backgrounds of children in preschool, offering books and stories in multiple languages fosters an appreciation for cultural diversity and creates an inclusive learning environment.
For children acquiring a second language, read-aloud activities are essential, not only for language acquisition but also for cognitive development. By engaging with stories, children strengthen their abstract thinking, ability to understand context, and draw meaningful conclusions. Additionally, these sessions foster stronger relationships between children and educators, promoting a sense of community and collaboration.
ReadIn consists of 2 partners, working as educational providers for teachers, and several associated kindergartens. The partnership aims to develop, promote, and deepen competencies in kindergartens and among preschool teachers regarding read-aloud activities and methods, and their effects on children’s language development, multilingualism, cognitive development, and collaborative skills.
The project focuses on challenges faced by preschool teachers in children’s language development and how implementing read-aloud activities in various ways, with different goals and purposes. Competence development days will provide preschool teachers with the opportunity to effectively use the activities. A digital workshop based on UNESCO International Literacy Days for other preeschool teachers and a follow-up online conference, can be an event for preschool teachers across the EU.
At least 400 preschool teachers will have the opportunity to benefit from the parts that will be shared digitally, through webinars. The material designed by partners will be shared with associated kindergartens and those who wish to access it. Ensuring increased access for preschool teachers to work with language development methods through targeted read-aloud activities, and increased competence among preschool staff to work with these methods and an understanding of their effects.
