On November 28, we hosted the STEP by STEP Poligon at Cankarjev Dom in Vrhnika, Slovenia. This international event brought together educators, youth workers, and professionals from various sectors to tackle a critical challenge: supporting young people facing emotional, behavioral, and mental health difficulties. As part of the Erasmus+ Empatheatry project, this day-long event exemplified our commitment to fostering meaningful change through practical, hands-on learning.
Why Step-by-Step?
The name “Step-by-Step Poligon” reflects our philosophy: creating meaningful change requires thoughtful, incremental progress. The event was designed to build skills progressively, ensuring participants could connect theory with practice.
Our program was designed to engage participants in practical scenarios while giving them the opportunity to reflect, discuss, and grow.
- We started with creativity: The morning began with improvisational theater activities led by Društvo IMPRO, which set the tone for creativity and empathy.
- Case studies: The heart of the event was our interactive group work. Participants tackled real-life scenarios, exploring challenges like supporting youth with ADHD, addressing anxiety in school settings, and handling social exclusion. They identified practical solutions, receiving expert commentary and guidance along the way.
- Insightful lectures: The last part was dedicated to insightful lectures by experts such as Matic Munc, Marina Ristić, and Irena Brenčič. Their presentations offered deep insights into topics like building authentic relationships with youth, empowering young people as protective factors, and working with children with special needs.
At the event we also presented the results of the EMPATHEATRY project. Participants had the opportunity to explore the outcomes of our international research and practical guidelines for working with young people with fewer opportunities. These tools provide a valuable foundation for professionals striving to better understand and support young people in their challenges.
One of the central takeaways from the day was the shared understanding that creating a safe space and building authentic relationships are fundamental prerequisites for quality work with young people. Only in a safe and trusting environment can youth truly thrive and overcome challenges.
This event also reminded us of the importance of connection and collaboration. When we come together, share our experiences, and support one another, we can create real change in the lives of young people. We’re proud of the positive response and grateful to all participants, speakers, and partners who made this day such a success. Together, we demonstrated the power of connection and collective action in addressing the challenges faced by young people today.
