Between 20 and 23 April 2026, as part of the SPACE-NEST project, we took part in the third international study visit and workshop in Málaga.
The study visit gave participants an opportunity to explore the rich ecosystem of rural initiatives in the mountainous area of western Málaga, Serranía de Ronda, known for its natural heritage, vibrant communities and innovative approaches to local development. Among the examples of good practice was the Algaba de Ronda cooperative, which has transformed a restored Andalusian farmhouse into a centre for environmental education, agroecology and experiential archaeology, bringing together nature conservation, cultural heritage and sustainable entrepreneurship. Participants also visited the Asociación Montaña y Desarrollo, the innovative rural centre LAB Genalguacil, and the Social Innovation Hub in Benarraba.
A key element of the study visit was a design thinking workshop, held in the former secondary school in Cortes de la Frontera. During the workshop, participants developed a range of ideas for transforming the space into a multifunctional hub for entrepreneurship, training, community services and cultural activities.
