SENTIM project is part of STEP everyday for a few months now and we have already successfully implemented some activities. Project teams in Spain, Italy, Greece and Slovenia have done a research about the state of social entrepreneurship in each country. Few examples of good practice in the scope of social economy and entrepreneurship were also presented and we look forward to discovering more positive and inspirational stories in the future.
But more interesting work was done after the initial research. STEP and Burgos Acoge have conducted quite a few interviews with immigrants: entrepreneurs and those who only have ideas and a lot of entrepreneurial spirit.
In Slovenia we have conducted 20 interviews with individuals coming from different countries: Spain, USA, Macedonia, Iran, Albania, China, Canada, Russia, Zimbabwe, Georgia, Serbia, Uruguay, Bangladesh, Morocco and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We have asked them about important skills that entrepreneurs need and they agreed that knowledge and skills in communication, organisation, finances, marketing, management and business are crucial for every entrepreneur.
To be open for opportunities, know the market and be aware of potential returns on investment are very important before starting a business. Customer orientation, team work skills and networking are also significant aspects to consider at every step of entrepreneurial path. But it is not only knowledge and skills that matter – personal characteristics can also affect the business. Being engaged, open-minded, courageous, persistent, flexible, creative and responsible can open doors to success.
Even though there are many disadvantages and barriers for immigrant wanting to do business in a new country, we must not forget about advantages: having different mindset and perspective, authentic experiences, being interesting for locals and having the knowledge of other languages are the things that can be useful for individuals who want to begin an entrepreneurial path in a new country. Our entrepreneurial colleagues also had a lot of suggestions regarding the support environment for entrepreneurial immigrants.
And we must not forget about their advices for future entrepreneurs. We are happy to conclude this article with sharing some interesting advices with you:
Important note: this is just a teaser before an interesting SENTIM event in April in Ljubljana :)
